Proper Use of Jack Stands

One of most essential tools in auto maintenance or repair is a jack stand. Elevating your car is necessary to finish a repair job successfully. In changing tires, for instance, you need a tire-changing jack to remain safe. When working under your car, however, jack stand is a must. Though this tool is very easy to use, you still need to know the proper way of using it. A jack stand should be placed in its proper position.

When doing a car repair using a jack stand, you must put your vehicle in gear and set the parking brake. Using a floor jack, you can jack up the car. If you have no floor jack, you can use the tire-changing jack instead.

Lift one side of the car at a time just like in changing tire and place the jack stand. Repeat the procedure until you set everything up. In putting the jack stand under your car, follow the safe jack positioning which is indicated in your owner's manual.

Lower the jack gradually until the car is resting on the jack stands. Check if the jack stands are in the right position by leaning on the bumper and shaking the vehicle.
